As Jason Garrett begins his 5th season as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, there are still a number of questions that must be answered this off-season. This year presented unique problems as the team was operating with limited salary cap room and a need to get their star quarterback under contract. The front office has been busy restructuring deals for veteran plays while simultaneously creating contracts for rookies and free agents.
The most talked about deal of the off-season was the $108 million new contract for QB Tony Romo. With this new deal, there is a great deal of pressure for 33 year old veteran leader to produce results. The team has not been able to win the big games down the stretch, but feel that with some new additions and key pieces they have a chance to take the NFC East Division title.
The important assignment for offensive coordinator Bill Callahan, who now takes over play-calling duties, will be to get more players involved in the offense. The running game will be headed by DeMarco Murray, who has shown spurts of great ability when he is healthy. He will be backed up by a stable of young running backs, including rookie Joseph Randle from Oklahoma State University. The shining star of last year Dez Bryant will hope to continue this season as he has emerges an incredible threat in the passing game. He will need help to take pressure off him from Miles Austin and Jason Witten.
The defense has been completely restructured with the addition of new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who will implement his Tampa-2 defense and the 3-4 scheme. This system hopes to create more takeaways as the team only came up with 16 during the last season. With a number of player coming off of injuries, they will need leaders DeMarcus Ware and linebacker Sean Lee to step up. The cornerbacks Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr will need to solidify the outsides as the team will have a number of new faces at the safety position.
There will be a number of changes this year which should make for an exciting season for Cowboys fan.
